On January 16, 2019 the prohibition lobbyists from Smart Approaches to Marijuana and full legalization advocates from Minnesotans Against Prohibition held back-to-back press conferences at the Minnesota State Capitol. One of the most insidious myths promoted by SAMMn was that prohibition of marijuana protects people from the dangers of illicit drug use. The truth is that the most dangerous part of using cannabis is getting caught by police. The best way to put a stop to that danger is full legalization under a thoughtful regulatory system that included reasonable taxation and safe dispensaries for this healing plant.
Being criminalized is not the only way that cannabis prohibition can ruin lives. Listen to Blythe Thea - a patient in the legal medical cannabis program in Minnesota - tell the story of how her use of legal cannabis has effectively ended her career as a research scientist. Prohibition at the Federal level means that she cannot work for any research organization that gets grants from the Federal government -which is basically all of them. While full legalization of cannabis for adult use in MN will not change that situation. But, when Minnesota joins the growing number of States that allow people to use cannabis as their medicine of choice, the pressue on the central government to end cannabis prohibition will become undeniable.
