PROMOTION: Students looking to get their first big break in the animation industry should get involved with the Red Bull Canimation challenge, an open competition that could see you given an internship at one of the UK’s leading animation and post-production houses: Aardman, The Mill and 12foot6 – as well as seeing your work featured on Channel 4 and in cinemas around the country.

The energy drink brand is well know for supporting the creative industries – including having the Red Bull Studio in London, a state-of-the-art music recording and production facility.

The Canimation brief is to create a short film inspired by the Red Bull can. To learn more, watch the video below.

The competition is split into three categories by animation technique: CG, stop-motion or hand-drawn–- so whatever background you’re from, you’re in with a chance of winning the top prize. To help you get started, Red Bull has provided you with a selection of visual assets on the Canimation web site, plus soundtracks to work with if you don’t fancy creating your own.

The deadline for entries is Tuesday November 15, when the entries will be showcased on the Canimation site for the public to vote on. Two weeks later, the 10 most popular films (in each category) will be put to the vote of a panel of expert judges including Aardman’s Merlin Crossingham, The Mill’s James Farrington and Dave Anderson from 12foot6.

The winners will be presented with their prizes at the Red Bull Canimation Awards Ceremony at the Empire Theatre in Leicester Square on December 15. The best work will also be showcased on Channel 4 in January as part of a ‘Red Bull Canimation’ adverting take-over.

The winners will get the spend an internship with their chosen studio, where they will have the opportunity to learn from some of the UK’s top creative talent and work on live commercial briefs. This will be an incredible ‘leg-up’ to those wanting to find success in the animation industry.

Other prizes include Autodesk’s Entertainment Creation Suite Premium 2012 – which includes the latest versions of either the Maya or 3ds Max CG suites, plus MotionBuilder and Mudbox – a top of the range laptop, Stop Motion Pro or Digicel Flipbook Pro.
