ANDREJ DÚBRAVSKÝ ▪ LARVA RUN
Od 25. januára do 22. marca 2019 v ATELIERi XIII
From 25 January till 22 March 2019 in ATELIER XIII
Dúbravský has always been interested in everything living, ever since the beginning of his creating. Animals, lakes, plants, chickens, insect and sex... In June last year, the author noticed big spiderweb nests and this moment defined his painting for a next few months. These were the nests of haired caterpillars of Fall webworm moth (Hyphantria cunea), thanks to which he freed his painting signature. The paintings of caterpillars from the summer of 2018 (for example "The Big Pink Caterpillar") are more "akvarelistic" and "sketchy" than the previous series of roosters from 2017. In some paintings of caterpillars, Dúbravský got nearer to almost abstract expression. Since that summer, he has started to complete his painting with very diluted acrylic on raw canvas with oil-pastel drawing. Thanks to the moth, Dúbravský became more and more interested in the ecosystem of surrounding agrarian countryside to find out that according to scientists, "insect armagedon" is threatening (the installation of drawings and articles on the wall). While some spieces such as Fall webworm moth and "Asian ladybeetle" are spreading increasingly thanks to the climate change, our original spieces of insect are on the edge of extinction. We have lost more than 75% of flying insect in the last 30 years and this "insect armagedon" is a global, even political, problem. The ways of cultivation, homogenization of the landscape, the use of herbicides and pesticides are among the biggest problems - intensive agriculture fueled by agrosubsidy, from which mainly so-called "agromafia" is benefiting the most in Slovakia. Dúbravský is interested in the caterpillars for various reasons. Firstly, there are spieces among them that are supposed to be protected and on the other hand, it's for their purely painting potential. "Many paople remain a kind of a mental larva all their life, that will never transform into anything useful, the humankind as a whole is in a sort of a larval stage," says Dúbravský and is reflecting on himself, "am I myself such larva?" Greedy larvas are a symbol of endless effort to grow and consumerism (for example the painting "Hairy Caterpillars in a Nest"). The installation of 700kg of worn clothes that covers the floor of ATELIER XIII relates to consum and cumulation ("fast fasion" is one of the most polluting industries in the world). According to Dúbravský, the installation on the floor evokes the environment of a kind of a "nest of larvas."
