Here's a selection of portraits I made during the 2012 IFFR Filmfestival in Rotterdam. It contains portraits of Nanda Costa, Elisa Sednaoui, Lav Diaz, Claudio Assis, Óskar Thór Axelsson and others.

Quote from Blurb.com-Blog - Book of the Week
"what can you achieve in 10 minutes?"
"Rogier Maaskant’s book, “Portraits,” features a series of portraits from the 2012 International Film Festival in Rotterdam – all taken within a ten-minute window. He certainly had some good subject matter to work with; there’s a whole lot of character to be found in this group of directors and actors. But Maaskant manages to capture so much story in each of these portraits, that I’m blown away by how quickly he got these shots. If the secret to great portraits is capturing the essence of each person, Maaskant seems to have the magic formula tucked away in his camera."
Making these portraits took me all together 148 minutes.
Making this clip and deciding to show it another seven years.
It is not very common for a photographer to show all the pictures he took.
But that’s what this short clip does.
In the end, you’ll see, photography’s magic is not ‘tucked away in a camera’.
As has been suggested.
It happens when you go look for it.
On the left, you’ll see all the pictures I made.
That means including on the spot exposure-meting by snapping away, all the misfires of the flash, poor framing by poor aiming and unflattering images caused by bad timing.
As a photographer you need all these.
Not only to warm up - since it was seriously freezing on this roofterrace in Rotterdam - but also to find the right angle for composition and lighting.
Not to forget the right look of the portrayed.
And of course: their trust.
A big thanks to all of them.
For their time and ease.
