I should preface this piece by saying it's part of a larger project. If you wan to experience the full interactive video experience it goes along with you should check out theblockofwood.com. It's a really fun experience.
That said, I was tasked with creating a 30 second spot that would cover the categories of being for a product, in a documentary style, using some kind of animation.
This is the result. I was inspired watching a fashion designer hold up a figure with the skirt cut out to different fabrics. I thought it would be really interesting to see something like that animated!
I wrote the VO in an interview style tone for the documentary portion and then found stock clips that worked for the imagery. I then did a lot of math and ended up printing over 200 individual frames from those clips. Over the course of about 2 weeks I cut out pieces from each frame that would reveal the wood texture underneath.
Once the cutouts were complete it was another 2 days worth of shooting stills to recapture the images with the wood background.
I am really proud of how this piece came together considering there was no real budget and it was my first time doing stop motion. I hope you enjoy and once again encourage you to check out the full project at theblockofwood.com
