Binaural recording of a Gamelan composed of several ceramic, porcelain, glass and lead crystal vases of several shapes. This Gamelan is a project by Companhia de Música Teatral, in cooperation with the University of Aveiro and Vista Alegre - Atlantis. It was conceived by Paulo Maria Rodrigues, Ana Guedes and Henrique Fernandes.
This video shows a timbre improvisation by Paulo Maria Rodrigues at Museu de Aveiro, where the Gamelan is currently on display. It was made with a handheld iPhone (sorry for my shaky hands!) and binaural microphones, which explain Paulo's somewhat strange head movements...
I'm currently beginning a piece for marimba and live electronics, for Nuno Aroso, a brilliant percussionist, which will explore musical beatings of close tones as rhythm sources. This Gamelan will thus be obviously featured on the electroacoustic part!
For the full binaural effect, please listen to this video using headphones.
