The title of this piece is a quote from David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986). Being a gay and transgender person who grew up in a small suburban town, I/my body was often viewed by other people as something scary and weird. Like the character of Seth Brundle, my body is undergoing a physical transformation that others may find frightening. I thought about the ways in which Brundle accepts his own transformation into a "monster" and what it might mean if his transformation had happened on purpose. By animating 35mm photos of my hometown, I also reference "big bug" horror movies of the 1950s, such as Them! (1954), Beginning of the End (1957), The Deadly Mantis (1957), and others, linking fears of nuclear radiation with the white, cisgender/heterosexual, middle class suburban ideal of the nuclear family.
Stop motion and digital animation on 35mm photos. 1 minute 23 seconds looped.
