Protecting and expanding our climbing areas is a multifaceted effort, and one of the critical facets is land management: maintenance, trail-building, user-group education, and building positive, strong land-manager relationships.
Table Rock State Park, South Carolina. Tom Caldwell, current CCC President, has been working with TRSP officials for years to expand the climbing season at these pristine, towering granite cliffs. In Nov., we also hosted the first ever SC ClimbersFest, a project made possible by the The American Alpine Club Cornerstone Conservation Grant powered by REI. With 100+ dedicated climbers attending, we were able to refurbish and rebuild nearly 2 miles of trail leading to the base of the cliffs.
The result of this persistent, hard work is we have managed to significantly expand the climbing season at TRSP, and we are close to gaining access to Pumpkintown cliffs within the park. Why? Because the land managers believe in our ability to help them manage this great resource.
