Though wedding bands symbolize enduring commitment, most jewelry consumers don’t know the origin of the metal used in their rings. The precious metal supply chain is nearly impossible to follow from start to finish leaving both manufacturers and consumers in the dark. While some steps have been taken to un-tarnish the jewelry industry’s reputation as environmentally harmful, mechanized metal mining still accounts for about 34 percent of total US toxic-waste annually. Craft activist and writer Gabriel Craig confronts this systemic problem as he leads a gold prospecting expedition that attempts to reconnect jewelry makers and consumers with the top of the precious metal supply chain.
This video is the second in a four part series documenting the project. The project was realized with support from American Craft Magazine and Ethical Metalsmiths.
