In the wake of the rising popularity of organic food and sustainable food production, Sophia Fuchs '11 presents her Development Studies thesis on the diffusion of organic agriculture, as "an innovation in the developing world." She focused her research on the situation in Ecuador, and conducted her fieldwork in the small community of Perucho.
She asks to following questions: to what extent does the process of transition to organic agriculture represent the diffusion of innovation from the Global North to the Global South? What are the actors and mechanisms at play in this process of diffusion? And what motivations and values cause farmers in Ecuador to consider and to adopt organic practices?
