Father Lou begins this teaching by calling the Gospel today a contradiction to the wisdom of the day, both that of Jesus’ time and of the world today. Some beliefs today are that test scores show learning, low taxes are the ultimate aim and radical individualism is just fine. Compare this to Jesus saying the poor - the street people, the sick whose insurance doesn’t cover their pre-existing conditions, the elderly who have to choose between medicine or food, the single mother who works two minimum wage jobs and still can’t feed her family, and those who lost wages and homes during the government shutdown. To these is the Kingdom of God. The Gospel continues with the word, “Woe to …” those who got rich at the expense of the poor. These readings challenge us to reflect upon where does each of us fall in living the Gospel values? Do we trust in God or in human wisdom?
