Background A/V from "Radiation Cranes" performance
from Continuum's "iPerform" performance art show on 8-26-11 at Spacetaker gallery in Houston, Texas.
'Radiation Cranes' is made from clips of "Mount Fuji In Red", a short from Akira Kurosawa's movie "Dreams" paired with actual news footage from the nuclear reactor meltdown in Fukushima after the earthquake and tsunami. The piece ends with me drawing a Japanese flag on a piece of origami paper, turning it into the radiation symbol, then folding it into a crane while singing 'Kimigayo'* (the Japanese national anthem). The audience was then invited to turn an image of the Japanese flag (on a small piece of origami paper) into the radiation symbol and fold it into a crane as well. 1000 will be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.
