In 1915 25 men started a recruitment march from Gilgandra in Central West NSW to Sydney. Lead by Bill Hitchen, by the time they had completed the 300 mile march their numbers had swelled to 263 men who enlisted in the Australian Army for the battlefields of World War 1 in Europe. The march at the time became famous throughout the western world and was the inspiration for 9 similar recruitment marches in Australia.
