Scottish wildcats are a whisker away from extinction. Historical persecution, habitat loss and more latterly, interbreeding with feral and domestic cats, has led Scotland’s only remaining native feline to the brink. There is hope however. Ambitious plans are afoot for the creation of the National Wildlife Reintroductions Centre in the Cairngorms, where wildcats and other species, can be bred in significant numbers, before being released to the wild. This is a unique opportunity - perhaps the only opportunity - to save the Highland Tiger.
We were recently commissioned by Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) to create a film portraying the plight of the wildcat and to make a plea. Building this stage-of-the-art facility isn’t going to come cheap but without it, the future of wildcats is at best, fragile. This is surely a time to come together to ensure a future for a creature embedded in Scottish culture and which right now, clings on by a claw.
