NB: Apologies to Mayor Robertson, the typo in his name on the title card will be changed asap.
If you missed The Great Debate, no worries, this video was captured from the eye of the storm, thanks to Lauren Gill (Vancouver civic election candidate and winner of Last Candidate Standing) who gave me her seat in the centre of candidates area.
Lauren Gill was very active in the movement to save Little Mountain Social Housing Project from grossly premature destruction. In fact, she set up an “Occupy Little Mountain” site on Main Street and 35th Avenue in the winter of 2009, in order to bring attention to the fact that good housing for hundreds of Vancouver residents was being demolished during a housing crisis.
As I expand my web documentary at littlemountainproject.com scenes with Lauren will appear on line. She is sharp, articulate and compassionate. Just the sort of person we need at Vancouver City Hall.
A note on the Debate Circus:
Clearly, there not sufficient time structured into the debate for the public to pose questions to the candidates. Anton and Robertson fled the hall just as soon as Q&A began.
As a result, promises that the public would speak after “official questions” were not kept. At least 20 audience members who lined up at the open microphone did not speak. This audience did not come to be spoken to, they wanted dialogue.
What “Occupy Vancouver” was shouting throughout the meeting, may have been right after all: “City hall is not listening…”
The uproar that followed was great public theatre.
There was never any danger of a real riot. I didn’t see any Canucks jerseys in the crowd.
Finally, kudos to St.Andrew’s-Wesley United Church for taking on the the challenge of presenting this increasingly contentious debate.
A NOTE ON THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN PROJECT
Littlemountainproject.com is a web documentary that examines the destruction and re-development process of The Little Mountain Housing project. This site will evolve, as 3 years of documentary filmmaking in and around Little Mountain are integrated into it.
