»Ych Mif - The Island of the Ancestors« is a story about the attempt to preserve one's homeland and culture. More and more indigenous people are disappearing as modern man expands in the name of economy, globalization and research. The Nivkh are not excluded from it. But unlike peoples such as the Sami, they lack the opportunity to survive through tourism because of their seclusion. In addition, there is a split in the people themselves. While families like the Nyavans continue to transfer the knowledge of their ancestors, to children and grandchildren and to live according to a traditional model, other Nivkhs already collect and archive their material heritage, in the form of traditional clothes writings or songs.
