The Story of Jaguarfeather
In an ancient desert,
I drew a circle in the sand – a sacred space defined – and sat
therein with quiet alertness and a deep respect for the unknown.
Although I sat for one day, and then yet another, I did not receive
a vision, nor did any voice speak my name in the barren wind.
I was not discontented, for this is often the way of things.
I traveled towards my home that lay far away in a greener place, and had
yet one more night to be passed in the lands of black lava
and towering red castles of stone.
One more night under the sharp stars and the quiet clouds
and the crystal-dry air.
I expected nothing,
but I was ready for anything.
I had a dream.
I was a man of power – a shaman of some note,
seasoned and confident in my abilities and in my role.
A group of lawmen had pursued a pair of criminals and had tracked these men to a cave.
I had been summoned because of the nature of the cave.
It was a place not entirely of this world – a magical cavern of some
power that these men knew they could not safely enter.
I could enter the cave, however, as this was part of my dual
nature and a prime expression of being a shaman. I approached
the oval mouth of the cave and confidently entered the portal to
determine if the two wrongdoers had crossed into it in their
attempts to escape.
Inside, I found an object confirmed that the wrongdoers had, indeed, entered here.
I also knew immediately that they would never emerge again from this place.
They had been taken by the Jaguar.
He was a denizen of the other world – the world of magic
to which the cave was a nexus. It was, indeed, a magical Jaguar that
had taken those men and I knew they would never be seen
again in the world outside. I gathered up the thing that told me
this was true and took it outside the cave to show those
who were waiting for me.
When they saw the enchanted symbol and sign, they also understood
that their search was over and justice had been done.
I did not have to speak, only to hold up the great and brightly
glowing Feather that I had brought out. It’s uncountable colors
flickered and danced with every slight movement or breath of air.
It was taller than anyone standing there at the mouth of the Cave.
It was iridescent, bright, and beautiful.
It was the Feather of the Jaguar.
