The Evolution of Storage Networking in the Age of Virtualization and Cloud
Over the past decade, there have been a number of forces driving evolution in the storage industry, from denser drives, to new protocols such as iSCSI, to storage virtualization, and innovative data management facilities such as snapshots. In recent years, one of the main driving forces behind evolution in the storage industry has been the adoption of virtualization and more recently cloud. Virtualization changes not only the economics of the infrastructure, but also how storage assets are deployed and used and how capacity and performance must be scaled to stay in step with the business requirements. Cloud is taking us down another path where storage is a shared resource that is persistent and infinitely scalable. This presentation provide an overview of the storage industry evolution and focus on the challenges organizations are facing today as they adopt virtualization and cloud and present some technology ideas that address these challenges in an innovative way.
