While preparing our international arts festival on identity and decolonisation Same Same But Different we came across borders. Several Congolese artists did not receive the necessary travel visa, which obliged us to cancel two performances.
For both the world premiere of Histoire du theâtre II (by the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula) and for the performances of Sept Mouvements Congo (by Congolese director Michael Disanka), the necessary travel visas were refused. This forced us to cancel these performances. Our open letter in response was supported internationally. They appear to be not isolated cases. That is why we are organising a debate on the planned premiere evening of Histoire du théâtre II.
On 21 February at 18.00 in the Minardschouwburg we will organise a debate concerning the difficulties in international artistic cooperation.
Took part: artistic director of NTGent Milo Rau, choreographer/ dancer/ director Faustin Linyekula, Flemish Minister of Culture Sven Gatz and Bambi Ceuppens (Anthropologist for the Africa Museum).
