Vic and I visited the Strongs on their farm, looking for the connection between someone's sense of place, and the sounds around them. Jan and Garth told us of hearing direction of winds and weather, bird alarms, listening to the giant farm machines to avoid breakdowns, the meanings of the barks of dogs, the alarm cries of the chickens and when to pay attention to the sounds of the sheep. Then Garth took us outside to show us the fabulous discs and to see if we liked the way they rang. He and Vic and I built up this beautiful instrument of what was just there on the gro9und under the tree, and then Garth brought it down to the schoolhouse on his tractor. Thank you Strongs. This is part of the "Sonic Landscapes" project with Vic McEwan that is emerging out of my Rural Residency here in the Riverina area of Australia.
