Vanishing Present Productions
Becoming Visible is an intensely disquieting fusion of documentary and video art, focusing on an offshore oil and gas seismic survey off the South African coast that was extended into the whale migration season. The film investigates irregular deep-water mammal strandings during and after this 2016 survey. It explores the risks posed by unilateral and indiscriminate traumatizing noise exposure from oil reconnaissance surveys to many marine species, and the vulnerability of fishery-based livelihoods to these impacts. Becoming Visible advances the theme of nature as political asset and questions the scripts of consumptive economics embedded in South Africa’s governmental approaches to environmental policy.
