“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” - Marianne Williamson
We are indeed so very powerful - each one of us! And yet fear, and our fear of the power we each have, is not entirely a bad thing.
Fear is to be respected and listened to as a sign that something could get hurt, that something is out of balance, that something is not entirely connected up and flowing in the right way. No - fear is not something to fear - it’s a call to listen more deeply to what really is.
It’s how we respond to the fear of our own power that makes the difference between if we will become a conscientious objector to our own life purpose or a compassionate, sensitive and courageous hero.
How can we both fully respect our fears AND fully access our power? What state of being will enable us to be uninhibited and assertive in our use of power, yet still sensitive enough to know how to use it effectively for the greatest good of all those involved?
The more power you have, the more responsibility you have to use it well. And we’ve all been hurt at some time in some way by the misuse of power. On a very deep level we know this - power can be dangerous. It’s naive optimism to think otherwise.
And yet NOT stepping onto our own power, we give in to the voice of hardened pessimism that would have us play it safe and keep our self - and our potential positive impact - small.
Inside each of us are two core concerns around using our own power: the altruistic, compassionate side of us that’s concerned not to harm another living being, and the self-centered, person-with-a-passion-to-live side of us that’s doesn’t want to risk hurting ourselves or being retaliated upon or rejected. We MUST keep listening to both these concerns as we move forward and take initiative. We must the way in which using our power actually builds empathy and trust instead of diminishing it.
What would be different about the difference you are making in the world right now if it felt totally safe for you to fully trust your own power? What will it take for you to build that trust?
