MIR IS HERE ! by Irina Danilova
January 15, 1999
The performance appropriates two common paradigms from outer space -- the "Space Walk", "space station", and redeploys them in urban situations. When the performers broadcast press conferences "from Space" the Internet video transmission quality imitates current live video broadcasts from Mir.
2020 Update: “MIR is Here!”, a 1999 performance piece and video recording by Irina Danilova and Steven Ausbury, reimagines a broadcast from the Mir space station, focusing on 2 astronauts and their intricate processes of suiting up, working together, and communicating. Using a host of found materials in unconventional ways, this piece reflects on the act of occupying space and its many meanings. This recording was viewed live with a 20 person audience and includes a following reflection and Q&A with FF director Martha Wilson and both artists.
