Veterans' Day, 11/11/11, was celebrated by the elementary students on Westminster's Opelousas Campus at 9:00 a.m. in the Gym. Highlights of the ceremony included a presentation of the colors by the WCA Cub Scout Troop; a singing of the National Anthem by Megan Bold, accompanied by Collin Arabie on the snares; the singing of the songs of four branches of the Armed Services; interviews of the Veterans with questions from children; recitations of the classes; and singing of patriotic songs by all in attendance. A special moment was observed as a mother shared about her "Prayer Warrior" son who died in Iraq. Another special surprise was the sixth graders' choice for their memorized presentation -- Ronald Reagan's speech at the Brandenburg Wall. It was a delightful rendering by these young people who love that particular speech. Closing remarks and prayer by Superintendent Merida Brooks ended the hour of sharing, expressing that it was "fitting" that we spend this time recognizing the great cost of those who are willing to define our nation and our freedom.
