The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) include several Science and Engineering Practices outside the disciplinary content knowledge of science learning. In an effort to provide opportunities for students to engage in schooling as scientists and as engineers, work in iterative design is essential. Students must be provided the opportunity to design, build, test, collect and analyze data, and reflect and revise products in an effort to maximize performance and solve problems. This quarter students have had the opportunity to engage in this work via their Bottle Rocket Project. This collaboration with the Maker Space challenged students to apply their learning during the design and building of a Bottle Rocket. With the goal of applying Newton's Laws of Motion and iterative design to maximize the range of their rockets, students were able to not only show their understanding of scientific content knowledge, but also develop the engineering skills and persistent problem solving abilities set forth by the NGSS. This collaboration supports the development of the 21st century skills essential for life-long learning and is only made possible when teachers authentically share space, time, and a common vision for the growth and development of our students.
