Demonstration of the dynamics of charged particles in a Paul trap. Charged dust particles (actually lycopodium moss spores) are held by an electric field that oscillates at 60 hertz with an amplitude of 6 kV at the electrode.
The first few minutes of the video show the spores as they appear in real time -- stretched into lines that slowly move in slight air currents. The next few minutes slow time down so the 60-hertz micromotion is clearly visible. The last two clips show the ions trapped by an Amherst College Mammoth.
