Leesah “Sick Prose” Velasquez
Velasquez is a member of the Nuyorican Poets Café National Slam team. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Velasquez took to writing as a creative outlet and diversion from the poverty and rampant mental illness that plagued her family and surroundings in her youth. She credits her sanity to poetry and the power of escape through writing, and has performed in various venues all across the United States, sharing the stage with some of the best poets in America.
Strauss, aka the Jewminicana, a vivacious New York native of Dominican and Jewish-American heritage. Strauss has made appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Dave Ramsey Show, and starred in the HBO Latino documentaries “Habla Ya” and “The Bigger the Hoop.” She is also an Internet radio personality known as Loca La Boca (The Crazy Mouth) on Urban Latino Radio (UrbanLatinoRadio.com).
Anderson was the winner of the Grand Slam Champion of 2011 competition at the Apollo Theater and second place winner at the Knicks Poetry Slam in 2010. More than just a poet, this young artist is a self-taught guitarist and singer who infuses music into all she does.
Michael “Juan Bago” Diaz
Diaz is an accomplished actor, writer, producer, and director. He is owner of Heights Entertainment, a multiservice marketing and film production company. Diaz works extensively with HBO and the New York International Latino Film Festival as a marketing consultant. He is also the auteur behind the film “The Story of Juan Bago,” a cinematic response to mainstream show business and the frustration born from the lack of interesting roles for Latino actors.
Torres is a 2011 Adcolor Rising Star Award Recipient and a part of the Multicultural Sales Planner for CNN. Torres is an integral part of the CNN Advantage team, the in-house sales and marketing unit devoted to multicultural and diverse communities. The group aims to raise awareness within the advertising marketplace of opportunities to reach all communities through relevant CNN content and has generated significant revenue across CNN’s portfolio of linear and digital brands.
It was a bold move to say the least. Intricately packing up a few essential belongings, leaving behind friends and family, and transporting yourself to another part of the globe may seem crazy, but not when destiny is calling. Armed with only a handheld camera, this young Panamanian arrived in the concrete jungles of NYC and began to lay the groundwork for photography and cinematography genius. After shooting over 150 album covers, directing 12 music videos and holding posts as an Art Director at Jive Records and Creative Director at the Nu America Agency, this visionary is ready to take himself and his novel organization to the next echelon. Carlos Andrés Gómez
Gómez is an award-winning poet, actor and playwright from New York City. Gómez is a two-time international poetry slam champion and co-stars in Spike Lee’s Inside Man. He was also named Artist of the Year at the 2009 Promoting Outstanding Writers Awards and has further showcased his talent and skills on MTV’s Poetry Slam alongside Talib Kweli.
