This is a simple little project that I found pretty easy to do. I should have used resistors on each pin, but I just wanted to complete this quickly. I was able to light all leds on the 7-segment display except for the left decimal point. I did have the right decimal point tied to a pin.
The code I used was very quick and dirty, it simply used delays between turning the 8 pins on and off. I am sure there is an easier way to do this if I do a little research.
If I were actually designing an application I probably would have the microcontroller send bcd (binary coded decimal) signals to a 4511 or some similar chip. This would require less pins.
