The Works Program has provided 40 local students and job seekers with work experience and 13 people with employment during the redevelopment of Tonsley. These jobs were embedded into our construction, civil construction, landscaping and street scaping contracts.
For example, take CATCON, Tonsley's Stage 3 civil works contractors. We worked closely with CATCON and Tonsley's Precinct Director to find the right local people for work experience and employment opportunities, like Joseph.
Philipp Dautel, Precinct Director, Tonsley Innovation District: "The Works Team understands the contractors' needs and provides motivated, trained people to fill these positions."
Joseph Lagu, Works Program graduate: "My training program prepared me with work experience because I knew what the employer was expecting of me."
Project Manager - Land Divisions, CATCON: "There's a wide range of benefits for both CATCON and the participants of this program. From CATCON's point of view it allows us to add back to the community, and help people out with jobs and work placements."
Joseph Lagu, Works Program graduate: "This opportunity has changed my life because I'm busy now, not sitting at home doing nothing. I've got my independence, I've got a car, and I can send money to my mum in Uganda."
As a result of embedding economic development clauses in Renewal SA-managed contracts, the Works Program has delivered more than 630 work experience placements and 270 paid employment placements to build the employability skills of local people.
