Just over 20 years ago, in 1988 Mildura hosted the inaugural Asia Pacific Design Conference at which the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) was formed with vision of a group of like minded Designers and the drive of Arthur Leydin.
This provided the inspiration to conduct a conference that continues to value the importance of creative and design thinking, encouraging students, educators and creative professionals to realise their potential and influence in their community.
The inaugural Cultivator Regional Design Conference was held in 2010 providing the opportunity for creative people who originate or operate in regional Australia to present and share their passion, inspiration and journey.
The word cultivator has a deep and rich connection to Mildura’s history with regards to the settlement of this area as an irrigation colony founded by the Chaffey Brothers. It was also the title of a weekly journal prior to the Sunraysia Daily called “The Mildura Cultivator”.
The dictionary definition for Cultivator.
4. he wants to cultivate his mind: improve, better, refine, elevate; educate, train, develop and enrich.
The conference is an initiative of the local design studios, allied industries, Education & Media staff at Sunraysia Institute of Tafe and gave students studying art & design the opportunity to be involved in the theme, brand, promotion and organisation of the conference.
The conference is held every 2 years in October.
