DOROTA SADOVSKÁ ▪ 12+
Od 29. marca do 24. mája 2019 v ATELIERi XIII
From 29 March till 24 May 2019 in ATELIER XIII
Dorota Sadovská is an established Slovak artist, that is oscillating between the painting,
photography and performance medium. However, she is essentially a painter that is consciously working with the respect of painting in the context of art history. The domain of the painter,
that entered the Slovak scene in the 90s, has become the human body, which she understands from a double the angle, as matter but also in its personification with a certain model. Another level of interpretation of her work is a play with perspective and unusual angle of presentation. Balancing between ugliness and beauty escalates in portraits depicting unusually back-bended heads. Dorota Sadovská is an author who is constantly evolving and reflecting on the current forms of ontemporary art. She explores installation options of a hanging picture, digital photography and body as a bearer of various performatives. This is how she has established herself in the Slovak as well as the international art scene in the last twenty years. She has moved her creation in a level of contradictions (when she reflects on good and evil), digital manipulation and ecology, but foremost, the reflection of the world around her is typical for her. The current exhibited cycle of paintings 12+, that captures married couples from the Slovak cultural scene, is linked to this as well. Since 2008, the author has worked almost by the methods of a sociological research as she has been photographically capturing married couples. In times when marriage was losing its social meaning and credit, she had to broaden her parameters from the middle-aged generation to the older one. Anyways, Dorota is starting a game with stereotypes in the medium of painting, for which she uses photography as a template. With a certain amount of irony, she explores femininity, masculinity and mutual marital relationships. By paraphrasing traditional oval pictures with marital portraits commonly placed in bedrooms upon the bed, she is referring to the tradition of the institute of marriage. Yet, at the same time, she again chose a certain form of criticism with the atypical almost profiles. A moment of philosophical meditation is present, when the marital looks miss each other and are looking further. Although we can see and recognize the portrayed, we cannot make eye contact with them. There is again the provocation and the interest in a non-traditional portrait and painting format, that are typical for the author. Exhibited painting cycle exceeds into space and the author creates a kind of a nest of love, respect and coexistence. At the same time, it is also a self-reflection because a we enter the exposition looking at the portrait of the author with her husband.
The exhibition is curated by Lenka Sýkorová.
NINA ROSA is a Prague-based trio founded by its singer and violinist Nina Marinová. Nina met her bandmates during her studies at the Jazz Conservatory in Prague. A decade later they formed a band blending a variety of styles which include jazz, swing, reggae and folk but adding their own sensibility and a little bit of twist and shout. The name of the band is based on Nina’s biggest fan – her grandmother. Her lifelong support inspired Nina to use her virtuosity (as grandma would say) to create a project that defines her own take on music. On the scene since 2016, the band has already performed on many prestigious festivals – e.g.: Pohoda, Boskovice, Letiště and various other czechoslovak music festivals as well as played more than 60 concerts in the V4 region. Succesfully catching the ear of the critics, the band received a nomination for the “Best new artist/band of the Year” at Radio_Head Awards 2017. Since then, the buzz around the band is spreading on the airwaves as their music is being regularly featured and broadcast live by the Czech and Slovak Radios (Spring International Music Festival @ ČRO VLTAVA, Radio FM, Radio Devín, Regina…).
The band is preparing material for their debut album which will include their 2 released singles, but will also explore other colors of the spectrum when it comes to sounds, languages, moods and roses. They plan to bring it to their fans and any music-lovers in 2019.
