TextSheet generates and visualizes a term matrix from a given text. The term matrix is visualized by dots that represent the occurrence of a term in the text. Terms are organized on the vertical axis of the matrix, on the horizontal axis lies the term index. Dots that represent the occurrences of a single term connected by a line to visualize the text segment in which the term occurs.
This experiment provides an interesting alternative \'birds-eye view\' of a text or document. The visualisation accentuates unusual attributes of a given text, shown visually by clusters, prominent gradients, and whitespace. These are features that would otherwise remain hidden and can provide valuable insight to the structure and content of a text.
Comparing documents with different purposes, eg an educational textbook with a book of poetry demonstrates clear differences in form. Comparing documents from the same type of form, provides more subtle insight into individual characteristics eg. the writing styles of 2 different authors.
TextSheet uses an interactive coupled view consisting of a term matrix visualization and a text view. By hovering over a dot in the term matrix a highlight of the corresponding term is triggered in the text view.
