'Awake?' profiles young South African hip-hop artist Abantu and his father Vukile Tshewula who was imprisoned at Robben Island. It's a shout out to the youth to remember the struggle for freedom from apartheid.
How did we get involved? Well last week we were invited to South Africa to make a short film in a week with young people in Motherwell township near Port Elizabeth.
We had no idea what we'd come up with, or exactly who we'd be working with.
Nomtha Ntsheyiya was an 18 year old woman on a year long internship at Mandela Bay Pictures. We worked with her, 5 of her friends and people from Motherwell Arts Centre during an amazing week. We also made another film too, 'Tales of Headz' which we love too.
Take a look, this was Nomtha's first time making a documentary and she did a great job. Sadly, Nomtha died in 2010 of complications during pregnancy. Working with Nomtha was a real privilege and the only consolation in her passing away at such a young age is that she had already shared so many of her talents with others who will continue to shine for her.
