Restorative Justice: A Transformative Approach to Address Sexual Harm with Children
Many professionals were trained that pornography is harmless – a normative part of discovery and expression of one’s sexuality. What happens when what is normalized, is also normal-LIES? While there are indictors that many children/youth are doing quite well despite the cultural dominance of hyper-sexualized media and pornography, there are also indicators that point to a wide range of harmful effects. These harmful effects include pornography’s role in the development of children’s harmful and problematic sexual behaviors. With rapid advancements in technology, the research demonstrating effects of pornography exposure to children is also emerging. This session speaks to research and practice that point to the need to recognize pornography as the “pink elephant” in the room as it relates to the weight of it as a factor in the development of harmful sexual behaviors.
