"How can non-government organizations play an important role in the development process?"
As a researcher heavily involved in mitigating the effects of the armed conflict that occurred in Guatemala, Luz Mendez participates in various projects and non-governmental organizations including the Union Nacional de Mujeres Gautemaltecas, UNIFEM, and the Independent Experts’ Assessment on the Impact of Armed Conflict on Women and Women’s Role in Peace-building. She is currently the coordinator of a civil society alliance that combines psycho-social healing with advocacy for justice for women survivors of sexual violence during armed conflict.
In this video Mendez explains how rape victims have be ostracized and excluded from human rights violations and why the inclusion of this hidden aspect of Guatemalan history is important to the development and reconstruction of this society.
