Pacific Whale Foundation partnered with the Marine Mammal Research Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa and the University of Hawaii at Hilo to collect body measurements and biopsy samples of humpback whales to assess their health. In March, we flew 118 UAV flights over nine days and measured ~150 humpback whales, including calves, juveniles, and mature adults. Although the focus was on capturing footage from the air, we also had opportunities to gather underwater footage to identify sex and get more detailed information on body condition. Research activities conducted under NMFS Research Permit #19703 and NMFS LOC#18101. All UAV activities were conducted in accordance with FAA Part 107 regulations.
