My footage is of the life of our domestic worker at work in Durban, South Africa. Mama Thembi grows vegetables (beet root, lettuce, spinach, chilli, butter nut and pepper) in our garden which she uses in our lunch and has sold previous crops.
She bought the plants from Warwick Junction Precinct market. Warwick is the main transport hub in Durban. 460000 commuters (about 1/6 of Durban's population) and houses 9 markets with 5000 traders. I recently fell in love with the markets and its people and opportunities it provides. Most low-income workers pass through here. It is a vibrant and intricate system.
Thembi makes amazing lunch for us. On 11.11.11 we just happened to have putu pap (a traditional staple meal) with chicken stir fry.
