Exhibited in Art Chidoya 3331, Tokyo, Japan, 2017.
Radio technology allowed an unprecedented transmission of live audible experiences; however, airwaves soon became subject to sovereignty. Poet and radio collector Tanikawa Shuntaroa (born 1931) explored the possibility of listening to distant sounds. Shortwave pirate-radio station hunters explored this possibility too, hunting for and tuning-in distant voices beyond human-made borders.
An interactive interface in the form of a white globe, Waves Beyond invites its explorer to revolve it, hunt for and tune-in distant sounds, and communicate beyond borders and celebrate radio technology. The stations include Tokyo Rose (broadcasting from Japan to the US during World War II), Radio Caroline (broadcasting from UK seashores during the 1960’s), Voice of Peace (broadcasting from the Mediterranean sea to Israel and its neighboring countries in the 1980’s).
