Leroy (Lawrence Jansen) and his sister, Veronica (Kristen Abate) visit their nana in a nursing home. Nana is "played" by the Director, Steven Tanenbaum's eighty five year old mom, Dorothy. Both the character and Dorothy have Alzheimer's and live in a nursing home. There are many other examples of this on and off screen mirroring in the film. This scene was also shot on the sly, with the director right off camera to guide his mom, who doesn't always recognize him. But right after they wrapped for the day, Dorothy asked, "Did I do alright?" She couldn't have been better.
