Young Voice Ancient Song is a 60 minute documentary film in progress (currently in post-production). This is a 5 min teaser for the film.
In 1970, a 21 year old from Philly named Jeffrey Werbock heard a sound that changed his life- the music of Azerbaijan, called Mugham. As Jeffrey’s relationship with Azerbaijan evolved, he witnessed history taking place, as Azerbaijani people demanded independence from the Soviet Union. In 1992, one year after regaining independence, Armenia invaded a region of Azerbaijan known as Karabagh, the birthplace of Mugham.
In 2000, Jeffrey traveled to Karabagh refugee camps to see if Mugham could survive despite occupation. In the camps he discovered refugee children who played and sang Mugham beautifully. Young Voices Ancient Song travels with Jeffrey as he searches for the children eight years later, and in the process explores the deep connection Azerbaijani people have with their culture, and the power of music.
