The only democracy in the Middle East: what went wrong?’

The talk will examine closely the claim that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. This will be analyzed both historically and currently, with a particular interest in the implication of recent events in the Arab world.
The main argument put forward will be that, viewed from these two perspectives, it is hard to accept the description of Israel as indeed the only democracy in the Middle East, and more importantly to accept its definition as a democracy (or even an ethnic democracy as some of the Israeli liberal scholars argue.
