You have collected your passages from the text or research (Cds)...great! Now it is time to put those Concrete Details to use.

Before each Cd, you need the Context. The context is what the reader needs to know in order to understand your Cd. In an essay about a novel, the Cx is what is going on in the story right before the passage. In research, the Cx is what the reader needs to know (terms, styles, history, people, importance) in order to understand the Cd.

After each Cd, you need Commentary. The commentary is where you show that you know what you KNOW. The commentray is the place for your observations and thoughts on the Cd. Why is this Cd important to proving your thesis? This is where you analyze. Your commentary should be larger, with more depth, than your Cx and Cd combined. And this makes sense--the Cx comes from the book, the Cd comes from the book, but it is only the Cm that is new and your thinking.
