I made Amplify after traveling to Rwanda in July 2011, where I recorded the songs of women and girls from across the social spectrum. Amplify weaves these lullabies, work songs, anthems, and laments into an intimate vocal collage; in the installation, layers of individual voices are heard softly through ear-level speakers set just behind a cloth shroud. Text & visual representations of the voices are projected onto the cloth surface.
-Ben Rubin

Amplify was commissioned by the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles for the exhibition entitled, "Women Hold Up Half the Sky," on view through March 15, 2012.
