We had the opportunity to visit Day 1 Bags and Backpacks in Boerne, Texas. Day 1 Bags was founded by Hunter and Paula Beaton. They are Bandera Electric Cooperative members and our #WhoPowersYou second place winners.
When Hunter was a child, he was astonished to see his new foster siblings coming home with their belongings in a trash bag. So he did something about it. At 15 years old, Hunter began a program called “Day 1 Bags” that filled 100 duffel bags with essential items for foster kids as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Hunter’s vision has since grown into a statewide program with national partnerships ranging from Flying Circle, San Antonio Threads, One Simple Wish and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Through these amazing partnerships and with some help from Hunter's mom, Paula, they have collected and distributed more than 27,000 bags to children across Texas and 13 other states.
Thank you, Hunter and Paula, for your contribution and your commitment to kids in your community.
