Dr. Ravi Shridhar discussed the Phase II Study Of Intrahepatic Arterial Injection of 90-Y Glass Microspheres As First-Line Treatment For Cholangiocarcinoma.
This is a trial using intra-arterial injection of radioactive glass microspheres as first-line treatment for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Dr. Shridhar believes chemotherapy has limited utility for this form of bile duct cancer. The treatment is 1-2 outpatient procedures that only require a half-inch incision in the groin to deliver the spheres through a catheter to treat the liver. The treatment results in safe delivery of very high doses of radiation targeted to the tumors in the liver.
The main criteria for participating in the study are
1. Disease restricted to the liver
2. Healthy liver
3. Life expectancy greater than 3 months
4. No previous radiation, chemotherapy, or embolization to the liver
