In may 2019, elders of Smith Landing First Nation, alarmed by the level of the rivers, decided to raise their voices.
"Smith’s Landing First Nation, a Treaty 8 First Nation, has never received consultation or accommodation on any project contributing to significant changes within their Territory resulting in infringement to their Treaty rights.
They ask for immediate action to protect
the land and stop industrial development projects contributing to climate change and the further deterioration of their way of life.
Canada must declare a national emergency on climate change and assist communities in developing adaptation strategies to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the future generations"
