Life in the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam, a residential theatre school in Tamil Nadu, India
The Kattaikkuttu Sangam’s young people’s training and advocacy programme or the Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam is at the cutting edge of tackling social disadvantage and the barriers that prevent rural Tamil girls and boys from making theatre their profession. It provides high-quality artistic training and academic inclusion and contributes actively to creating sustainable employment for vulnerable, young, rural people.
The Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam occupies a unique position among the performing arts schools in India. It bridges several different gaps—rural/urban, “low (status) art”/“high (status) art” (or “folk”/“classical”), female/male performer and informal/formal sector.
