This render is my first try to make something with a most excellent plug in for maya, called as_polyFracture by Alin Sfetcu. This scene took 2 days to set up, and render. The plug in is solid and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants high level of control over the areas that break.
Sparkles are done in post in after effects. Using highlights and doing a directional blur in 4 different directions.
