Joy is better than happiness. In our culture, happiness is based on circumstances (which are ever changing). Happiness is fleeting. Joy, for the follower of Jesus, is eternal, because joy is centered on the eternal and unchanging Son of God! In our passage (Philippians 4:10-13) we have one of the clearest examples of Christian joy being lived out in the apostle Paul. He had learned in Christ the secret to facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need (vs. 12). For Paul, being in Christ meant deep and utter contentment regardless of his circumstances. For Paul, this was at the heart of Christian joy. This was joy. If Christ is your Lord and Savior, then you have all that you need to persevere today no matter what you're facing. May we as a church proclaim to the world, "Christ is better! Only He can provide true joy, contentment and eternal satisfaction! Turn from those things that will not last and cannot fulfill. Only Christ can! Only He can rescue the rebel, which is all of us."
