Sometimes, when you wake up, it’s difficult to distinguish between dream and waking reality right away. Svartisen is reminiscient of this in-between state where familiar surroundings appear strange and unknown. A combination of animation, dance, and acrobatics, Svartisen’s frosty, absurd world is populated by characters portrayed by Pirjo Yli-Maunula and Ilona Jäntti as well as oddly human-like, deep-frozen bathrobes. Unexpected events create gripping tension and humor, like when a threatening dream transforms into something completely else at daybreak.
Co-creators of Svartisen are light designer Ainu Palmu, animator Tuula Jeker, costume designer Heidi Kesti, visual artist Eric Mutel, sound designer Aake Otsala and make up artist Yanski Sova. The piece contains compositions by Terje Isungset (All Ice Records). Texts distributed for the audience were written by JP Manninen, and they can be heard narrated at svartisen.net.
Svartisen is produced by Flow Productions and JoJo –Oulu Dance Centre.
